FDA confirms Nestle’s Toll House cookie dough E. coli contamination

June 30th, 2009 admin No comments

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that a sample of raw cookie dough collected from the Nestle’s plant in Danville, that E. coli has been found in a sample of Nestle Toll House cookie dough collected on June 25th.

David Acheson, FDA’s assistant commissioner for food safety told the press that investigators did not discover the E coli in the factory itself or on equipment in the factory only in a tub of chocolate cookie dough that had been made there in February.

Acheson, went on to say, “It raises the likelihood that it was an ingredient. And it really means that industry has to be constantly vigilant, because foods we think of as low risk could be contaminated with a deadly pathogen.”

To date, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated there have been 69 people from 29 states who have been infected with the food borne illness. Of those, 34 have been hospitalized, nine with a severe complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome. No one has died.

E. coli O157:H7 can cause diarrhea and dehydration. Kids, the seniors and those with weak immune systems are the most at risk.

Nestle voluntarily recalled the products earlier this month, and consumers can return to their local grocer for a full refund.

Thousands flee as Pakistan increases attacks on Taliban stronghold

June 22nd, 2009 admin No comments

Nearly two million people have fled fighting in northwest Pakistan, most since early May when the military began an offensive against Taliban insurgents in Swat Valley.

Army and intelligence officials have claimed that nearly 100 militants have been killed in South Waziristan since fighting erupted there last week.
However, Lt Gen Talat Masood, a retired army officer and a defence analyst, said the hunt for Mehsud would be a much lower-scale operation than the operation in Swat.

“They have got to get hold of Waziristan as it is the root of all problems and the centre of Talibanisation that has reached other parts of Pakistan,” he said.

“But that does not mean a major offensive like in Swat. It will be designed to push against the leadership, securing roads and strategic points and to gradually expand the army’s sphere of influence,” he added.

The mountains and fortress-like compounds of Pakistan’s seven lawless tribal agencies that border Afghanistan are believed by Western intelligence to provide sanctuary for al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.

Mehsud is believed to be hiding out in the lawless region.

The army struck peace deals with him in 2005 and 2007, but he flouted the deals, turned renegade and began to mount attacks on Pakistani security forces.

A retired Pakistani army general, who did not want to be named, said that although Pakistan will go after Mehsud it will leave alone other powerful commanders whose guns trained across the border on coalition forces.

“I don’t think they will go after the major players. They have some sort of relationship with them. They owe them something,” he said.

The army is engaged in placating major Taliban commanders in the area like Sirajuddin Haqqani and Gul Bahadur in North Waziristan and Maulvi Nazeer in the south to prevent them from fighting alongside Mehsud.

Mehsud also faces an internal challenge from Qari Zainuddin, a fellow tribesmen, and Turkistan Bhittani, a neighbouring commander. Read more…

Green tea ’slows prostate cancer’

June 21st, 2009 admin 1 comment

Green tea has been linked to a positive effect on a wide range of conditions, including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

The research, in the US journal Cancer Prevention Research, found a significant fall in certain markers which indicate cancer development.

A UK charity said the tea might help men manage low-risk tumours.
Although previous studies have shown benefits from drinking green tea - including some positive findings in relation to prostate cancer, there have been mixed results.

In this study, Philadelphia-based researchers tested a compound called Polyphenon E.

They were looking for a number of biomarkers - molecules - including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) which are indicators of developing cancer.

They also looked for prostate specific antigen (PSA) - a protein only found in the prostate. Levels can rise if cancer is present
The study included 26 men, aged 41 to 72 years, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and who were scheduled for radical prostate surgery. Read more…

Katherine Heigl Signs Contract for Grey’s Anatomy Season Six

June 18th, 2009 admin No comments

The cast lineup for season six of Grey’s Anatomy is becoming clearer by the day.

Following on Marc Malkin’s report last month that star T.R. Knight is leaving the series, a source confirms that Katherine Heigl “will be back.”

But what’s the official word from the show bosses and Heigl’s people?

Reps for the hit ABC series and for Katherine Heigl both declined to comment.

Season five ended on a double-death cliffhanger, as Knight’s character, George O’Malley, struggled to survive massive trauma inflicted by a bus accident, and Heigl’s character, Izzie Stevens, endured life-threatening complications of her cancer treatment.

The split decision—Knight goes and Heigl stays—was telegraphed in the fifth season finale’s episode-ending dream sequence, wherein Izzie seemed drawn back to the voices of the friends trying to save her life, while George seemed serenely ready to move into another phase of his existence.

What do you guys think about this outcome wherein Izzie survives and George dies or departs? Post below!
